TODAY’S PERSPECTIVE

Understanding OpenAI’s New Canvas Interface

Staying on top of the latest advancements can feel like an overwhelming task, especially when the technology seems to progress faster than we can adapt.

Today, we’ll explore the evolving roles of AI assistants and agents, how the Canvas interface bridges the gap between these roles, and actionable steps to make AI your ally, not your adversary.

Understanding AI Assistants and Agents

We’ve started bucketing AI behaviors into two primary roles: assistants and agents.

AI Assistants

AI assistants are collaborative and require continuous user input. ChatGPT is the most popular one.

AI assistants are really good for tasks like brainstorming and research, where you can write a simple command and get the result you want. Or the back and forth of a chat experience leads to better results.

AI Agents

In contrast, AI agents operate with high autonomy, proactively managing tasks with minimal intervention once instructions are set.

Imagine automating the analysis of resumes: after refining the screening questions with an assistant, an agent can handle the repetitive evaluation process, freeing up your time for more strategic activities.

This shift from assistant to agent is WAY more efficient, allowing previously human-driven tasks to be done completely autonomously.

OpenAI’s New Canvas Interface – Is it Both?

Last week, OpenAI announced Canvas: a collaborative project space that goes beyond chat and gives you a whole new “canvas” to interact with the AI in.

It includes features like inline edits, auto-detecting when you might want the canvas, and even some proactive action capabilities.

This hybrid functionality sort of takes assistants to the next level.

But there’s one key difference: the Canvas’s agent capabilities are designed for you by OpenAI, almost acting as OpenAI’s agents… not yours.

Stay with us.

If the agent was yours, it would be trained to do what you want it to do. But it’s not, OpenAI has trained it to take actions almost on OpenAI’s behalf (sort of as if an OpenAI employee was sitting next to you and taking actions in the app to help you).

Why This Matters

Regardless of whether Canvas is an assistant or an agent – this is yet another sign that we are moving towards a more autonomous AI world.

Everyone’s pushing for it because of what it promises: unlimited time.

And even though it takes time to learn these tools and stay up to date with the advancements, we hope you’re here because you get it and know how valuable and honestly mission critical to your career and business to stay on the edge.

USE CASES

The hottest new morning routine: walk & talk with your AI assistant 🔥

Have you tried ChatGPT’s new voice mode yet? If you haven’t — let this be your sign.

We were at an entrepreneur and creator-focused event last week and the buzziest new AI use case? How ChatGPT’s voice mode has transformed people’s morning routine.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Download the ChatGPT mobile app, go on a walk and hit the voice icon on the top right corner of the keyboard

  2. Answer these questions:

    1. What did I do yesterday?

    2. What are all the things I need to do today?

    3. What should my primary focus be?

  3. Then ask ChatGPT to summarize all of that back to you, and give you advice like they were a top performing business coach on where you could be more efficient

… so what are you waiting for? Put on your walking shoes and try it out!
