PREMIUM: Defining AI Operations + New Cohorts Announced!

A breakdown of the emerging AI Operations field; mark your calendars for the next cohort registrations

Happy Monday 🌻 đź¤–

This is going to be a packed member-only email - new resource drops, new bootcamp dates and some discussion of what we’re seeing with AI Ops.

Let’s dig in 👇️

Defining AI Operations

You’ve heard about AI Operations a lot from us - we have a growing set of playbook chapters covering what it is and the toolkit and adoption trends, to how to think about hiring and job descriptions and what doing the job actually looks like.

“AI Operations” is also popping up across LinkedIn and job descriptions; it’s gaining momentum fast.

So we wanted to take a step back for a moment and share how we see the emerging field of AI Operations 👇️

What is AI Operations?

With any new field, it’s nearly impossible to create a perfect term. I talked about in Slack that my friend Swyx who started the AI Engineer naming/discussion said it really well to me - “The goal is just to pick the least worst term”. After a lot of work, AI Operations is what we’ve decided is the least worst term for what we see as a new way of doing work, managing teams, and running businesses that’s about to emerge.

AI tools are great, but the future that early adopters are running towards is bigger: how do we build an AI-powered business…

And that question is answered by AI Operations.

AI Operations isn’t necessarily a job, it isn’t necessarily a team.

Ultimately, AI Operations represents a new generation of how businesses will operate, powered by the emerging capabilities of AI.

Unlike traditional operations that often require cumbersome processes, documentation, and human intervention to run a business, the promise of AI operations is that we can create and run AI-powered systems that automate, synthesize and optimize our work, freeing us up to focus on what’s highest leverage. And making human work more, well… human.

The jobs in AI aren’t just for engineers and PHDs.

In fact, the biggest talent gap will lie in AI Operations. The people who are able to translate business operations and expertise into AI-powered systems.

This isn’t new.

Even the best AI research teams in the world need subject matter experts. And the specific subject matter expertise that AI Ops people will bring to the table will be extremely valuable: how do you actually use this stuff.

We need people who are grounded in real-world business problems, and who can speak and solve with AI to usher solutions into organizations.

The skillset is about more than just AI Automations.

AI automations is one piece. So are chatbots and other knowledge management and synthesis solutions. Other pieces will include Models, Agents and more.

AI Ops will be much bigger than most think.

Gartner covered AI Ops in 2016 as “AI Ops combines big data and machine learning to automate IT operations processes, including event correlation, anomaly detection and causality determination.”

ChatGPT really did change everything.

The opportunity to automate operations processes expands beyond IT and into the DNA of every operationally focused team (marketing, sales, etc.).

The way that a business operates when it’s really adopted AI, AI-first, will feel very different than how we work and run businesses today.

And that’s why we’re committed to this community as we discover this new discipline and ultimately a new wave of skills, perspectives, and tools needed to operate a business AI-first.

đź‘‹ A few FAQs

What makes a cohort different from The AI Exchange membership?

  • Dedicated peer group going through a video-based course with lessons, quizzes, and homework

  • Live group sessions each of the 3 weeks to master the material

  • Certification at the end

  • All material is based on the research provided in The AI Exchange playbook and Member Hub. And we create these cohort-based learning experiences for people looking to learn via a dedicated experience.

Will there be other cohorts besides Prompting?

We started with prompting because we believe it’s a fundamental skill set in this next wave of AI, but the concepts taught in the course heavily develop essential AI literacy. If you have requests for other cohort topics? Ping Rachel in Slack or reply to this email.

What if I can’t attend the live group sessions?

That’s OK! They are completely optional and will be recorded.
