TODAY'S PERSPECTIVE
OpenAI's GPT Store: A Game-Changer or a Gamble?
If you've wanted to build your own version of ChatGPT for your industry, your use case, your ideas - custom GPTs were designed for you.
Custom GPTs are a new feature in ChatGPT that lets you add a custom prompt, upload your own knowledge, set up actions for the GPT to take - and more.
AND they just got a lot more interesting.
Last week, OpenAI announced the GPT Store is coming - a marketplace for discovering and sharing custom GPTs. WITH a revenue sharing model (to be disclosed).
Chances are, you're already seeing "How to become a millionaire off of custom GPTs" content all over social.
But before you dive in to Custom GPTs, there are a few things you should know.
Access to these custom GPTs is exclusive to ChatGPT Plus paid accounts. This could be a strategic move by OpenAI to increase Plus account adoption, and it could deter potential users.
OpenAI hasn't been forthcoming about the revenue sharing model. This lack of transparency could definitely discourage creators from sharing their custom GPTs.
Some of the data uploaded to and chat transcripts in custom GPTs are shared back with OpenAI for future AI model training. Some custom GPTs allow you to turn off data sharing, but OpenAI appears to have limited the use of this feature. Check if you have it by going to Configure > Additional Settings when setting up your custom GPT.
So, should you go all in on creating custom GPTs?
The answer isn't black and white. The GPT Store could drive significant AI adoption allowing people to share their creations and potentially profit. But the barriers to entry and usage are non-trivial.
